Most fences fall over because of how they were set.

Posts buried 2 feet deep — well above the frost depth this region typically demands. Posts set in concrete cones (water pools, freezes, splits the post). No drainage gravel under the post base. No proper gate hardware on the gate posts. So the gate sags within a year.

A cheap fence install will be leaning by year three. A properly set fence — same materials — will be standing straight at year fifteen. The materials look identical at install. They don't a few winters later. We set fences to last.

That's not how this works. Not here.

What to expect: investment & timeline

Every fence is different. Here's what most of our clients invest:

Scope Investment Range Typical Timeline
Basic privacy fence (~50 linear ft., 6 ft cedar, one gate) $3,000 – $7,000 4–6 days
Standard backyard privacy fence (~100 linear ft., cedar, one or two gates) $7,000 – $15,000 1–2 weeks
Full-property privacy fence (composite or PVC, multiple gates, custom posts) $15,000 – $30,000+ 2 weeks

Starting prices apply to simple, straightforward projects. Final pricing depends on size, access, demolition, materials, permits, structure, site conditions and finishing choices.

We don't aim to be the cheapest — we aim to be the most predictable.

Be cautious with fence quotes that come in significantly lower. They often exclude property survey, utility locate, post-hole digging below frost line, drainage, gate hardware, or post caps — and they often skip code compliance for pool enclosures or corner-lot visibility. A complete quote covers all of that, plus disposal of any existing fence.

Fence project questions

How much does a fence cost in Ottawa?

Cedar privacy fence: $45–$100/linear ft. installed. Composite: $80–$150/linear ft. PVC: $60–$130/linear ft. A typical residential backyard fence (~100 linear ft. with one gate) runs $7K–$15K. We give you a real number after a property visit.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Ottawa?

Residential fences in Ottawa typically don't require a building permit — but they MUST comply with the Fence By-law: 7 ft maximum in side and rear yards, 1 m maximum in front yards (with visibility triangle restrictions on corner lots). Pool enclosure fences have their own rules. We make sure your fence is compliant before we install.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Gatineau?

Quebec rules vary by sector. Some sectors require a permit for any new fence; others only for fences above a certain height. We check your specific property and handle the permit if needed.

How deep should fence posts go?

Posts should be set to the proper depth for the site and soil conditions — often around 4 feet in this region — with drainage considered so freeze-thaw cycles don't push the fence out of alignment. We dig to depth, set posts on a drainage gravel bed, then back-fill with concrete or compacted gravel depending on soil.

Cedar vs. pressure-treated vs. composite vs. PVC?

Pressure-treated: cheapest, ~10–15 years with stain, highest maintenance. Cedar: mid-range, naturally rot-resistant, ~15–25 years. Composite: higher upfront cost, ~25–30 years, no staining/painting. PVC: higher upfront cost, 25+ years, no maintenance beyond cleaning.

What about my neighbour — do they pay half?

In Ontario, the Line Fences Act lets you share the cost of a fence on the property line with your neighbour, but the process is formal and not commonly invoked. Most fences in Ottawa get built with one party paying — and either keeping the “good side” facing them or splitting it visually.

How do you handle the property line?

We work from your property survey. If you don't have a current survey, we recommend ordering one before we build — it's typically $400–$800 from an Ontario Land Surveyor and protects you from any future dispute. We don't guess.

What if I have a pool — what are the rules?

Pool enclosures have additional municipal safety requirements, including gate hardware, latch height, climbability and minimum height. We verify the applicable rules before quoting or building around a pool — get it wrong and the city won't sign off on your installation.

Can you remove my old fence?

Yes. Demolition and disposal are part of the standard scope — we include them in the quote unless you ask us not to. Don't forget that an old fence can mask property-line surprises — better to find out before we build.

What's the biggest mistake homeowners make on a fence project?

Buying the cheapest install. The materials may look identical at month one — but the difference between a properly set fence and a shortcut install shows up in year three. By year five, the cheap fence is leaning. The proper fence is still vertical.

How do I get started?

Book a consultation. We come to your property, look at the line, talk through the options, and give you a clear scope with real numbers.

"Having a contractor that is solution oriented showcasing innovation and creativity during the unexpected, definitely made the process easier and more enjoyable."
